What is National Art Honor Society?
NAHS was started by the National Art Education Association as a way to encourage awareness of the arts in schools and communities, as well as to celebrate the artistic talent of its members. It is a SERVICE organization, meaning we do different activities and fundraising to help support school, local, national, and sometimes even international programs!
o Remember, being a member of an Honor Society looks good for colleges, too!
o It’s a society where everyone that is a part of it cares about Art!
o There are college scholarships available only to National Art Honor Society Members!
Requirements for Membership
You must have taken (or be enrolled in) at least ONE art class in High School. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN ONE to be a member. This is a scholarly organization, so you also need to keep your grades up. This means at least a 3.0 in your art classes, and at least a 2.0 GPA overall. Character is an important aspect of the group as well. So, if you get in trouble for violating school rules (such as academic integrity), you may be given a warning, or removed from the society.
“Hours” Opportunities& Requirements
Over the course of the next school year (2016-2017) you will need to earn at least 25 “hours” of service to the society (if you are a brand new member). This can be done in many different ways, and does not necessarily all take place AT the meetings. Many times you will be able to take things home with you from the meetings and bring them back. When you come back, you log your hours (however long you worked on the specific project) in our log book, and have an officer sign off on them. Sometimes it might mean helping set up an art display or an art show. Sometimes it might be time spent making posters. There will be MANY opportunities THROUGHOUT the year to earn your hours.
The Hours Requirement changes based on how many years you’ve been involved:
· YEAR 1: 25 hours
· YEAR 2: 20 hours
· YEARS 3 or 4: 15 hours
Member Contract
At the meeting you received a green “Member Contract”. Please get this filled out as soon as possible and return it to me. Remember, this is a contract, so you are making a commitment to the society! We want you! If you were not at the meeting, come and get one of these from me!
o There is $10 in member dues to cover the costs of membership to the NAHS National group. It includes your official membership, as well as any regalia you receive as a result of your membership with the group. (if there is a financial issue with paying the member dues, please speak with Mrs. Roemer directly - $$ will never be a deciding factor in membership)
Activities that earn you“Hours”
We do lots of things to earn hours, like:
o mini-masterpieces
o pins to support causes
o helping with Homecoming/Spirit Week decorations
o creating murals for around the school
o helping other school groups that need our artistic talents!
o Face-painting during spirit week
o Helping in the community
o Helping an art teacher clean/organize their classroom & supplies
o And much more!
Induction Ceremony/NAHS Art Show/Potluck Dinner
The culminating event at the end of the school year will be the official Induction Ceremony. We will also have an art show at the same time. The idea here is to invite family and friends to celebrate all of your hard work and achievements throughout the year. We watch a slideshow, we make speeches, I usually tear up a bit… You receive your official member certificate at that point, and seniors receive special cords to wear to graduation that signify them as members of the prestigious National Art Honor Society!
How often do we meet?
See CALENDAR
o Meetings will be held every other week on TUESDAYS during Knight time. These are referred to as “General Meetings” – you must attend 12 of the 16 meetings in F221 to be a member in good standing.
o If you are an OFFICER, you will attend a meeting every week (on the weeks we don’t have a general meeting, officers will meet with Mrs. Roemer to make plans, etc.)
